Background [edit]
Afterwards YG announced that his debut album would exist executive produced by Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy, the two began frequently collaborating.[1] In June 2013, YG revealed that he had signed to Jeezy's record characterization CTE World.[two] Prior to the signing proclamation "My Nigga" was released as a track on a CTE World EP, #It'sThaWorld.[3] The song was then included on the first official CTE Earth mixtape, Dominate Yo Life Up Gang, which was released in August 2013.[four] Following the music video's release, the song was released past Def Jam as the mixtape's lead single on September 17, 2013.[v]
Composition [edit]
"My Nigga" was written past Keenon Jackson, Jay Jenkins, Dequantes Lamar and produced by DJ Mustard and Mikely Adam. It interpolates "The Sky is the Limit", as written and performed by Lil Wayne.[half-dozen] The vocal besides interpolates the popular refrain from C-Murder'south single "Down 4 My Niggaz".[vii] The vocal is a street anthem that celebrates friendship.[8] Overall its message is that to hang with YG and his crew, "information technology'due south a requirement that y'all don't trip over potential romantic interests, be averse to snitching, be willing to grab a case when necessary, and just exist nearly getting coin."[ix]
Critical reception [edit]
"My Nigga" was met with more often than not positive reviews from music critics. Brian Josephs of XXL stated the song, "is still the best song on My Krazy Life, simply part of the reason information technology succeeds represents why the project every bit a whole is a solid endeavour. It represents Compton recklessness to the fullest, but that sensibility never comes in the style of relating basic thrills, resulting in an instantly gratifying advantage."[9] David Jeffries of AllMusic said the collaborators chemistry is perfect and called the song great overall.[10] Michael Madden of Consequence of Sound chosen it one of the album's essential tracks saying, the song is "YG sound in miniature" and an instant banger.[11] Jordan Sowunmi of At present chosen it notably smoothen and credited it for plumbing equipment perfectly with the cohesion and strong sequencing of My Krazy Life.[12] Jesal 'Jay Soul' Padania of RapReviews said it was an "inescapable street canticle."[13] Dorian Mendoza of PrettyMuchAmazing stated, "the unabashed homie loyalty anthem of the year, serves powerfully every bit the centerpiece of the album."[fourteen] Jesse Fairfax of HipHopDX called information technology repetitive and catchy.[15]
Circuitous ranked "My Nigga" number 30 on their list of the fifty best songs of 2013. They commented saying,
To YG fans, it may take come every bit a surprise that "My Nigga" took off the way it did. Afterwards all, dude had been making comparable if not better and catchier songs with DJ Mustard for years. Somehow though, the stars aligned for this one, and past stars we mean Rich Homie Quan and Young Jeezy. Having catapulted himself to the forefront of catchy-claw stardom with that vocal virtually vague emotional responses to jealousy, Quan was able to strike again while the iron was still hot with the "My Nigga" chorus. YG himself switches upwardly his own catamenia for this 1, sing-rapping through his ode to his fellow man. Young Jeezy comes through as the older brother to smooth his veteran sense of camaraderie onto the young bucks, and it feels genuine. Having one of Mustard's meanest beats gear up the didn't hurt, either.[sixteen]
XXL positioned information technology at number 22 on their list of the best songs of 2013.[17] In Feb 2014, Complex named it the fifth all-time song that DJ Mustard had produced.[eighteen]
